spring blooms

As Miranda Priestly put it so disdainfully, “Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking.” But you know what? We need them… we need them to remind us of what’s around the corner, along with light evenings, holidays, picnics, pub gardens, and days off work because Kate and Wills are getting hitched. It’s all too exciting. So yes, Miranda, florals for spring. They’re pretty, they’re cheerful and they put a smile on our winter-weary faces. What more could a girl ask for?

h&m home: spring 2011

You like homewares, right? You like H&M, correct? Well, put your hands together, because the artist formally known as Hennes has come out with a dreamy range of interior goodies for spring, from cheery country cottage to quaint little gîte to stylish city pad. And don’t even get me started on that cherry duvet cover; it makes me want to design a whole room around it. By the way, the selection below is just a taster… please take a peak at the H&M website and I defy you to come away empty-handed. What H&M did with affordable fashion, they’ve only gone and done the same with home furnishings. Go forth and spend… or just gaze and drool. Either works.

“who are you wearing?”

Not only did we have the excitement of two award shows on Sunday night, but we also have the Elle Style Awards hot on their Louboutin heels. This side of the pond we had the BAFTAs (guess who won leading actor and actress! See all the winners here) and to be honest I was a little disappointed with the overall fashion choices in comparison with the recent Golden Globes or the SAG awards… for me, Jessica Alba was the clear winner with a stand-out azure Atelier Versace gown. It was also great to see Emma Watson, who continues to look chic and old-Hollywood, in a fresh-off-the-runway Valentino beauty (part of the collection seen here):

Over at the less conservative Grammy Awards in LA (click here for the winners) it was a case of anything goes, with the stars not afraid to step out in shimmering metallics and bold prints. This was a more difficult one to call with regards to my best dressed of the night… but I think I’ll go for Nicole Kidman, who looked far less severe (read into that what you will) than on previous occasions. I loved her wavy bohemian hair, the way the dress fitted her so perfectly and also how damn happy she looked! J-Lo brought the fierce, as ever, and I also really liked how Jennifer Hudson made the most of her newly svelte figure with a stunning navy Versace gown. Overall, I have to say, the Grammy ladies were the style winners. What do you think?

a rose by any other name

So, it’s upon us. It’s February, it’s a Monday, and it’s that day (and I bet you any money that it’s rainy and windy outside too, cos then it would be my least favourite combination of factors ever). But in an attempt to power on through to the 15th, I found the following recipe on Mowielicious, which yes, contains roses and oddly the word ‘potato’, but it also contains doughnuts that look suspiciously like glazed Krispy Kremes. However, they are homemade, and they look amazing. Nothing says “I love you” like a delicious mountain of treats (btw – are you thinking what I’m thinking, that it would make a fantastic alternative to a wedding cake?):

Before I go, I’d like to share some alternative V-Day messages that I found whilst online browsing, that are infinitely better than the ones Hallmark churn out:

{it had me at ‘moustache’}

{Mr Darcy… today, tomorrow, always}

{at least you couldn’t complain about mixed messages}

{I don’t think we need to elaborate}

{the hearts are romantic, the sentiment… is not}

{you’d hope so, wouldn’t you}

{let’s not push it}

yellow fever

Ever since I found that gorgeous yellow buttoned chair (as seen here), I’ve been noticing how a single yellow piece of furniture or print can lift an entire room. In my own house, even on the gloomiest of mornings, my bright saffron ‘Keep Calm & Carry On’ print and my vintage radio (seen here) have the power to give me a much-needed pick-me-up. So to start the week on a postive foot, here is a gallery of rooms that feature a splash of yellow, then a few ideas of how you can bring some sunshine into your home:
